Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends comes the first book in a captivating new duology following an ill-matched pair of spies posing as a married couple to investigate a series of brutal murders in 1930s Shanghai。

It’s 1931 in Shanghai, and the stage is set for a new decade of intrigue。

Four years ago, Rosalind Lang was brought back from the brink of death, but the strange experiment that saved her also stopped her from sleeping and aging—and allows her to heal from any wound。 In short, Rosalind cannot die。 Now, desperate for redemption for her traitorous past, she uses her abilities as an assassin for her country。

Code name: Fortune。

But when the Japanese Imperial Army begins its invasion march, Rosalind’s mission pivots。 A series of murders is causing unrest in Shanghai, and the Japanese are under suspicion。 Rosalind’s new orders are to infiltrate foreign society and identify the culprits behind the terror plot before more of her people are killed。

To reduce suspicion, however, she must pose as the wife of another Nationalist spy, Orion Hong, and though Rosalind finds Orion’s cavalier attitude and playboy demeanor infuriating, she is willing to work with him for the greater good。 But Orion has an agenda of his own, and Rosalind has secrets that she wants to keep buried。 As they both attempt to unravel the conspiracy, the two spies soon find that there are deeper and more horrifying layers to this mystery than they ever imagined。

There was even a moment when he used "darling" instead of beloved so as not to taint the word。 I saw it。 I noted it。 I'll never get over it。Knowing that Orion and Ros know their histories, know what the lack of love feels like, and found each other because of it brings me so much peace。 The quote above suggests to me that all she wanted was Orion, who would never show her cruelty。She's his light when he's lost, "his guiding saint, the Polaris of his heart。" No matter what the last few pages suggest。。 I know that they're stronger than the forces against them。I can't wait to be right。- Paige 。。。more

Chloe Gong will be paying for that therapy appointment if (view spoiler)[ page 506 & the couple running the underground weapons trade (hide spoiler)] is what I think it is。 If you know, you know。(view spoiler)[ I just want to put this under a spoiler cut because I am literally so confused。 How does representation work in this universe? Celia mentions multiple times in this book and the other duology about wearing a ribbon choker to cover up her neck to hide her true identity。 Oliver asks why do Chloe Gong will be paying for that therapy appointment if (view spoiler)[ page 506 & the couple running the underground weapons trade (hide spoiler)] is what I think it is。 If you know, you know。(view spoiler)[ I just want to put this under a spoiler cut because I am literally so confused。 How does representation work in this universe? Celia mentions multiple times in this book and the other duology about wearing a ribbon choker to cover up her neck to hide her true identity。 Oliver asks why doesn't she just take it off and Celia has a paragraph in which the reader reads her thoughts about the looks and words she would receive telling her that she wasn't a true woman。 But her father lets her take her dead sister's name instead of using Celia so he kinda accepts it but not enough to let her just be her。 She has to pretend to be her dead sister。 But then Orion's father is openly okay talking about Orion's bisexuality。 And Orion and Phoebe talk about how she steals his girlfriends and he steals her boyfriends。 This book mentions Marshall and Benedikt as husbands - which could just be how they refer to each other but it comes out of Alisa's pov so there's nothing really explaining this passing comment more to the reader。So homophobia doesn't exist but transphobia does? Or does homophobia exist and everyone around our characters aren't homophobic? Because if I remember right, people treated Marshall a bit differently after that quick story of him being caught with a guy in a broom closest except Roma and Benedikt。 So that tells me some type of homophobia exists。In the grand scheme of things, this isn't important。 It's just something that has always led me a bit confused at the end of the books because I'm reading about wars and racism but some of characters walk around very openly being queer and it's like - can they be? Or not? *This isn't saying the rep shouldn't exist - I adore the rep。 I just want to understand the world building here。* (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

What kind of person would spend all that time winning her trust until they were lovers, only to pull the rug out from under her and chase power instead? Trauma doesn’t have to lead to destruction。 Trauma can be the guiding point into something better, something stronger。 Change is no easy thing。 How could someone feel any of that for a person they didn’t know? How could her stomach dip with desire unless she already recognized the shape of their smile? How could her fingers ache to reach out unless she had already memorized the lines in their palms? "Some of us need to care about ourselves, too。" “Don’t be too hard on yourself,” Alisa said eventually。 “Juliette wouldn’t want that。” “You’re strong,” she whispered to herself。 “An agent, a dancer。” All she had wanted was love。 Somehow, she had gotten cruelty from every direction instead。 “I’m not being nice。 I’m covering the barest minimum of human decency。” “What is family for if not to love us and then break our hearts?” It was nice, for once, to be someone worldly and knowing rather than foolish and irresponsible and easily tricked。 Being tricked once was a tragedy, a strike from the merciless universe when it selected its random victims。 Being tricked twice was stupidity, a fault of hers for not learning her lesson the first time。 All she had ever known was love wielded as a weapon, love wielded as a falsity to lower her guard。 Power is more important than anything else。 You can’t fight for your values without power first。 “I didn’t care enough, not for my family, not for the city, not for the world。 Then I let someone I loved wreck it all, and it was the worst thing I’d ever done。” “You cannot save the world。 You can try to save one thing if you must, but it is enough if that one thing is yourself。” “Lady Fortune, you play foul,” And right now, no faction deserved her loyalty when they were making the very same scramble for power that would split the city apart once again。 Rosalind and Oriondearest, darling, beloved, qīn’ài de“I can pay for myself,” Rosalind said sternly。“My money is your money,” Orion replied。 “Kiss me。” Rosalind blinked。 “I beg your pardon?” “Are we in love or not, Janie?” “Who did this to you?” Orion’s voice was violently quiet。 “I’ll kill them。” “I don’t think you’re defenseless。 I am incensed on your behalf, as someone who has grown to care about your general well-being。 There’s a difference, beloved。” “Just humor me, Orion,” her voice faint “Apologies for the volume,” she bit out。 “Would you like me to blast your ear off to fix it?” “Must you be so violent, darling? Kissing it better would be perfectly fine。 There’s a spare magazine in my jacket pocket, but these pistols are just impossible to reload。” “What?” “Do that again,” he said。 She looked at the sink。 “Wash the razor?” “No, beloved。 Your laugh。” “Your life is mine as mine is yours,” she said, very seriously。 “We are bound in duty if not in matrimony。 I won’t make the same mistake twice。” “It’s cold outside, beloved。 I’ll fetch you your coat,” “You were my first hope that there might be something else。” Once this assignment was finished, he wasn’t ready to lose her。 He didn’t want to lose her now。 Janie Mead was a girl with so many secrets。 If he followed that string, he was following it to his own heartbreak。 He grinned, visibly waiting three seconds before tapping his forehead to hers。 “Don’t smack me。 I’m behaving now。 “You’ll make me self-conscious about my wrinkles。” “You’d be beautiful with wrinkles too。” “Attached to High Tide?” she echoed, her voice teasing。 “Have you grown attached to me, Hong Liwen?” “Yes。” His reply came easily。 It didn’t sound like he was teasing her in return。 “I have。” “You do not like him,” she warned her reflection sternly。 “You don’t。” Liar, her reflection returned。 She ought to poison herself again。 “We’re excellent spies, after all。” “I would rather die by your hand than have you believe me a traitor。 I would rather take a fast bullet than have us pitted on different sides of an agonizing battle。” “There is no trick,” he said。 “I allow this because I love you。” “You accused me of being a philanderer, and suddenly I wanted to prove you wrong。 You wanted daffodils at your wedding, and suddenly I wanted to be the one beside you at the altar watching you hold them。 I wanted it to be real。 I wanted it all to be real。” “I’ve never told anyone before that I loved them。 Not like that。 Only you。” He would promise to wander the ends of the earth and find where the sky began if it meant she would keep her hand there, if it meant he could drown out the rest of his frantic fears by focusing on the sound of her voice。 He had gone beyond getting attached to her。 She was his guiding saint, the Polaris of his heart。 Then she leaned in and kissed him once, like she was taking it for a vow, like she was delivering her own oath, and Orion could have gotten lost in it。 “Don’t”—he swung again—“touch”—another hard thwack—“my”—the crate broke into two pieces—“wife。” Celia and Oliversweetheart“Nation over everything,” Oliver repeated, his voice firm。 “But not you, sweetheart。 Never your life in exchange。” “You’re so damn selfish,” Celia said, jerking away from his touch。 “Have you ever stopped to consider that I value your life just as much? If you want to protect me, don’t you think that I want to protect you, too?” “Sweetheart, we work for the nation, but it doesn’t control us。” “You don’t know what you’re asking from me,” she whispered。 “I’ve seen what love does。 It’s powerful。 It’s selfish。 It will draw us away from the battlefield, and we can’t allow that。” “You can’t ask me not to love you by keeping me at arm’s length。 I’ll love you anyway。” Alisa MontagovaShe's an icon, she's a legend。 Ladies and gentelmens, her。 Alisa Montagova, the last of the White Flowers。 Romanovna。 Alisa Montagova had taken her dead brother’s name as her cover’s patronymic。 “I can get out of anywhere。 I’m Alisa Nikolaevna Montagova。” “Ugh, I feel like my brother,” Alisa looked up at the moon, regaining her directional bearings。 Rosalind trusted her to protect this vial, and Alisa would protect it。 The moment she fell off the grid, no one would be able to find her。 That was a promise。 。。。more

This was the first book by Chloe Gong I've read, and now I totally get the hype。 This was a thrilling spy story set amidst the backdrop of 1930's Shanghai。 It had everything I could have wanted: intrigue, action, and plot twists galore。 Every time I thought I had everything figured out, I was blown away by a new revelation。 I loved all of the characters and found them to be well-developed and relatable。 Rosalind was trying to atone for her past mistakes and remained guarded after giving her hear This was the first book by Chloe Gong I've read, and now I totally get the hype。 This was a thrilling spy story set amidst the backdrop of 1930's Shanghai。 It had everything I could have wanted: intrigue, action, and plot twists galore。 Every time I thought I had everything figured out, I was blown away by a new revelation。 I loved all of the characters and found them to be well-developed and relatable。 Rosalind was trying to atone for her past mistakes and remained guarded after giving her heart to someone only to have it broken and used。 Orion and his siblings were dealing with some pretty juicy family drama after his brother defected to the Communists and their father was accused of working for the imperialist Japanese。 When Orion and Rosalind were first thrown together, it was like putting oil and water together and expecting them to work well。 As the story unfolded, their relationship deepened into a true working partnership with trust, as well as a tense slow-burn romance。 So, if you enjoy enemies/rivals to lovers with plenty of forced proximity, you'll probably love this book。 Their dynamic was a lot of fun to read, and the banter had me chuckling quite a bit as their different personalities clashed。 I'd be remiss not to mention the commentary on imperialism and nationalism that this book provided。 The story illustrated a fascinating cross-section of the political conflicts of China in the 1930's, specifically between the communist, nationalist, and imperialist Japanese factions。 The characters also provided a window into the personal effects that Western imperialism had on the education, quality of life, and culture of the Chinese。 All of these different layers came together to create a compelling story that I'm still trying to wrap my head around。 There's so much more to say, but I don't want to spoil any of the numerous surprises。 Overall, this story was a fun ride with three-dimensional characters, lots of twists, multi-layered conspiracies, and a tense enemies to lovers romance with great banter。 I definitely recommend it and rate the book 5 out of 5 stars。See more of my reviews and other bookish content on my blog! 。。。more

I love the way Chloe Gong writes。 She has such a colorful, vibrant writing style: descriptive with much attention to details without ever being too much。 I’ve read Chloe Gong’s previous duology (really recommend reading that before this book btw) and Our Violent Ends was one of my top reads last year。 So, it’s safe to say that I had some expectations for Foul Lady Fortune。 However, I found this book sort of flat。 I guess that I expected Foul Lady Fortune to have the pace and action as These Viol I love the way Chloe Gong writes。 She has such a colorful, vibrant writing style: descriptive with much attention to details without ever being too much。 I’ve read Chloe Gong’s previous duology (really recommend reading that before this book btw) and Our Violent Ends was one of my top reads last year。 So, it’s safe to say that I had some expectations for Foul Lady Fortune。 However, I found this book sort of flat。 I guess that I expected Foul Lady Fortune to have the pace and action as These Violent Delight and Our Violent Ends which it didn’t, at least not in my opinion。 After reading about 1/3 of the book, I still wasn’t completely sure what they wanted to accomplish in the book… It did pick up a little about half-way through and all in all, it was a decent read。 It never crossed my mind to DNF or anything。 I just (and it pains me to say this) found Foul Lady Fortune to be a bit boring and plain。 Since the sequel is already in the making, I hope that Foul Lady Fortune was just the build up for whatever is going down in the next book。 I want the same amount of action (not necessarily fights but purely action), drama and plot twists that we got in Our Violent Ends。 (I would’ve rated Foul Lady Fortune a solid 3,5 stars but since neither Goodreads nor NetGalley allow that, it got 4 stars anyway。) Thank you Hodder & Stoughton for providing me with an eArc in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

Desperately want to rate this five starts for those last 150 pages but the beginning and middle was so slow to me。 I still got my heart ripped out and had multiple “WTF” moments at the end so it was very much worth the slowness。I will give a proper review soon lol。

rosalind and orion got me, i fear…no one is more surprised than i am by how much i really enjoyed this。 i definitely think this is a big step up from the original duology。 one complaint i do have is about how the characters speak。 the way they sometimes talk and phrase their speech sounded very modern instead of circa 1930s shanghai。 in some cases, it felt very out of place for the time period and it was something i also noticed in tvd。however, i’m very much anticipating the sequel (especially rosalind and orion got me, i fear…no one is more surprised than i am by how much i really enjoyed this。 i definitely think this is a big step up from the original duology。 one complaint i do have is about how the characters speak。 the way they sometimes talk and phrase their speech sounded very modern instead of circa 1930s shanghai。 in some cases, it felt very out of place for the time period and it was something i also noticed in tvd。however, i’m very much anticipating the sequel (especially thanks to that final sentence reveal) and i’m very glad chloe is putting out two books next year。 。。。more

I’m not really into spy stories that much but this one has such a unique setting—both in place and time。 I can’t recall another book that explores the mid-industrial period of China quite like this one。 I think this book does such a skillful job of concisely discussing what is quite a complex, political network。 Further, this book really emphasizes the social and cultural impacts of different ideological beliefs on people。Also, I really appreciate the diversity of characters and identities in this story。 This book brings attention to all different kinds of lived experiences in such a nuanced way, not making spectacles of anyone but being intentional in its inclusivity。 No one felt like a token character in this book。 When it comes to historical fiction, it seems like there is this impulse to “flatten” out characters and pretend that there was no diversity — but this book wholly avoids that issue with much grace and dignity。 Overall, I really like this book! I think it’s a great one for anyone who appreciates a thoughtful story full of plenty of intrigue and a gripping mystery until the very end — with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure~ 。。。more
